Jorge Rodríguez-Gerada is a Cuban-American artist who, since the late 90´s, has been questioning the imposed control on public spaces according to advertisers by replacing the faces of cultural icons with the faces of anonymous people. Most recently Rodríguez-Gerada has been creating awesome pieces out of charcoal on 200 year old wall surface transferred on to wood panel. “Wha?” is what I said too when I first saw his work.
“Rodríguez-Gerada’s large scale time base works avoid negative impact on the environment, challenge the conformity in contemporary art, and allow for a reflection that goes beyond the completion of the piece to focus in its concept, process, and the metaphor that comes forth because of the material chosen.”
